Cluny Abbey, a jewel of Romanesque art in Burgundy

Camping Abbaye de Cluny

One must imagine what Cluny was like in its heyday. Founded in 910, this abbey exerted a profound influence on Christendom throughout the Middle Ages. At the time, it was the largest abbey ever built and, by the end of the 11th century, it headed a network of 1,400 dependencies. This jewel of Romanesque art was sadly dismantled during the French Revolution. Only a few fragments remain, which unfortunately do not always convey what this majestic building once was. Fortunately, modern technology now allows us to imagine the sheer scale of the place at the height of its glory. In addition to Cluny, southern Burgundy boasts a rich religious heritage, featuring several beautiful Romanesque churches.
